Getting your finances in order for 2012
I was recently asked by the guys at CashZilla to provide my thoughts on managing your finances in 2012. The post needed to be concise so I wanted to make sure I covered only one topic. I wrote about the importance of stockpiling a decent amount of cash to reduce your exposure to financial risk. I was in two minds about writing this. On one hand, I think it’s an important element of money management that so many people are lacking. On the other hand, it’s boring, generic advice. It’s bland. It’s personal finance 101 and frankly, I felt a little embarrassed not having something more creative to offer. However, after much deliberation, I decided that even though the subject matter isn’t particularly sexy, it’s still one of the most important concepts in personal money management. The fact that this critical element of behaviour is missing from a lot of people’s lifestyles doesn’t make the message more interesting, but perhaps it does mean that it’s worth sharing.
So head on over to Cashzilla and check it out!…after my awesome sales pitch about how boring it is, why wouldn’t you?!

Ash – nice post. So many people are looking for the latest investment opportunities or risky stocks when they don’t even have a safety net in place. Good to be reminded of the basics!
