This can sometimes yield information about an applicant that could not be obtained from the job application, resume or interview. It’s a good idea when looking for a sales job to first check out your online image.

Many people make the mistake of using their social networking image for both personal and professional purposes. This can be a costly mistake. When using social networking sites for professional purposes, the settings are often less secure so more people can view your information. However, not only can they view your professional information you want them to see but personal information as well. The personal information should not be part of this. Therefore, it is prudent that if you are going to use social networking sites for professional purposes that you create a profile for that purpose only. This way you can set the security settings to allow others to see it if you want. Then if you have a personal profile, this can have tighter security only allowing people in your network to see.
When you perform a search on your name and negative information arises, this can often be fixed. One’s professional reputation is important. You don’t want to let misinformation mar this reputation. Protect your good name but keeping abreast of your online image.
